I manage to talk her into spending the rest of the weekend with me. Well, the daytime hours at least. She refuses to stay overnight, and I force myself to back off and let her get used to our relationship. As I walk Sailor to her door Sunday night, it hits me how much we have in common. Sailor isn’t only beautiful, she’s also intelligent and funny. I kiss her goodnight then force myself to head back to my lonely apartment before I break my promise. The first night we met, I knew she was important. After the weekend, I realize she’s vital to me. Like oxygen. There’s no way to live without her.

Over the next few weeks, we keep a low profile at the office but end up spending nearly every available moment together. My grandmother got wind of our new relationship and called me.

“I heard you’re keeping secrets.” Fuck. Nothing stays quiet around here. When I was fifteen, my parents were killed in a boating accident. My grandmother stepped in and took care of me and made sure I finished high school and college. After graduating with a business degree, I used my parents’ life insurance payout to start Holland Securities. Noni treats Melinda and Elliot like family, and I’m sure it’s one of them who ratted on me.

“I was going to call you,” I assure her and hear her sigh on the other end of the line.

“I expect you for brunch on Sunday.” She doesn’t leave me any room to refuse. “Bring your girl so I can meet her.”

Sailor fidgets the entire way to my grandmother’s home. I reach for her soft hand and give it a reassuring squeeze. “Don’t worry.” I place her hand on my thigh. “Noni is going to love you.”

My girl gives me a nervous smile but doesn’t argue.

Sailor charms my grandmother from the moment they meet. “Your home is beautiful.” She glances around the living room as Noni serves us Mimosas and tea sandwiches.

“Thank you.” My grandmother sits across from us and smiles. “You’re so sweet.”

I watch as my only living relative falls head over heels for my girl, and my heart sings. One obstacle down.

By the time we leave, Noni has made plans to meet Sailor for lunch later in the week.
